A Wildlife Crossing That’s Making I-25 Safer for Everyone

A highway can be hard to cross even when you know exactly where you’re going. For wildlife near Larkspur, Colorado, six lanes of I-25 have stood between parts of their habitat for decades.

Now there’s a route over it. The Greenland Wildlife Overpass is a wide, landscaped bridge built with animals like elk and pronghorn in mind. It opened in December 2025 as part of a larger network of crossings along the highway. www.codot.gov

And the results are encouraging. According to CBS Colorado, wildlife collisions in the corridor have dropped 91% with the overpass, five underpasses, and fencing working together. Cameras have also recorded elk herds and pronghorn using the new bridge. CBS Colorado

That’s good news for the animals, but it matters just as much to the people driving below. Fewer collisions mean fewer dangerous moments on the road, less damage, and fewer interruptions for everyone traveling through the area. It’s satisfying to see a project that gives wildlife room to move while making the drive safer for us, too.
